PCEP presenter showcase: Kyle Longley

Kyle Longley is the Snell Family Dean's Distinguished Professor of History in the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies as well as the School of Politics and Global Studies. The author of five books on American foreign policy and politics, this PCEP season he is hosting the program “In Search of Monsters: Modern U.S. Interventions in the Third World.”

the making of an ASU family

Laura and Herb Roskind attended Ivy League schools. But their hearts belong to Arizona State University and the large family of friends and colleagues they have created here.

How did such a strong connection come about for two people with no previous ASU ties?

“It all started eight years ago with President’s Community Enrichment Programs,” says Laura. The Roskinds had relocated from Boston several years earlier, and when they were introduced to PCEP “it created a tremendous relationship,” she says. “In fact, we’re not really sure if we embraced ASU, or if ASU embraced us.”

President's Community Enrichment Program showcases ASU

It’s every student’s dream – taking a class where there are no exams, no homework, no final grades. You just get to sit and learn from ASU faculty and other “classmates” and, possibly, find your passion at ASU.

That’s the idea behind the President’s Community Enrichment Program, except that the “students” are community members, and the class objective is to shrink the gap between town and gown.

You could call Shelby and Stephen Butterfield’s relationship a mixed marriage — she’s a University of Arizona Wildcat; he’s an Arizona State University Sun Devil — but there’s no questioning where the couple’s loyalties currently lie.
